Vegan Parents, Vegan Diet, Dead Baby

Lamont Thomas and Jade Sanders of Atlanta were recently convicted of involuntary manslaughter when their six week old son died of malnutrition recently, weighing only 3.5 lbs at the time of his death.

I take serious issue with this story for several reasons. I personally don't find the parents responsible for the boy dying from malnutrition, I think that (based on this story) they honestly had their son's best interests at heart. My problem, instead, lies with the fact that their son never visited a hospital so that a doctor could determine if the child was healthy.

The reason that the couple never took their child in for a check up was that they didn't trust the hospital environment, saying that they thought it would be full of germs.

The manslaughter charge comes from the child's diet of soy milk, soy based baby formula, and apple juice. The apple juice may have acted as a block for any nutrition for the child's diet, meaning that although he ate regularly and seemed normal, he died a slow pailful death by starvation.

I think that the parents should have been placed in jail for neglect. The child was so emaciated at the time of his death that a doctor was able to count the number of bones he had through his skin. What parent in their right mind would see their child looking like that and NOT take him to a professional for testing, just to make sure everything was normal?

The parents left the courtroom saying that they were going to jail for nothing, since they would never hurt their son. They were against cruelty to animals, they said, so why would they be so cruel as to slowly starve their son to death?

Unbelievable! How could you not know there is something wrong - ignorance is one thing - blindness is quite another :-(
